Sunday we continued in this month's unit, "Extreme Makeover: Redesigned Attitudes." We read the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18, and then concentrated on being humble before God. God knows us better than anyone, and He knows what's in our hearts. Because of that, we're honest and respectful when we go to Him in prayer.
I love when the kiddos have a chance to respond to the teaching by writing or drawing. You get a honest glimpse of their sweet hearts and of the faith and belief they have in our God. Each small group was given a large piece of butcher paper with either "I thank you, God, for..."; "I need you, God, for..."; "God, you are good because..."; or "God, I'm praying for..." They were asked to either write out or draw their prayers. Here are a few examples of their prayers. :)
"He gave us life. He is our best friend."

"You believe in us. God we love you. You love us."

"No sin. My family. No one sick."
"My grandpa to come back to life."
Aren't their honest prayers precious? Talk about faith of a child! "My grandpa to come back to life" is what that child believes God can do! I wonder how my prayers sound to God sometimes. I think sometimes I say what I think I should say, but I just need to go ahead and say what I want to say. Afterall, God already knows what's in my heart...He just wants to hear me tell Him. I need to be humble before God.
So here's the breakdown of this week's lesson:
THEME: We're humble before God.
BIBLE VERSE: "Have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had." Philippians 2:5
PASSAGE: Luke 18:9-14
CHALLENGE: Be humble, be honest in your prayers to God.
